Is my audio recorded or stored when I use the tools?
No. For tap tempo tools, no audio is involved at all — they work from the timing of your taps, which is pure mathematical calculation. For audio beat detection tools that use the microphone or file upload, all processing occurs locally in your browser using the Web Audio API. Do the tap tempo tools use my microphone?
No. The tap tempo tools require no microphone and capture no audio from your device. BPM is calculated purely from the timing intervals between your taps. Only the audio beat detection tools use the microphone or an uploaded file.
Which browsers work best?
Google Chrome on a desktop or laptop gives the most consistent results for the audio beat detection tools. What is half-time and double-time?
Half-time and double-time describe the relationship between a song’s notated BPM and how listeners perceive the pulse.
Half-time: A song notated at 140 BPM may feel like 70 BPM because the kick drum and snare fall on beats 2 and 4 of a slower perceived pulse. The BPM detector correctly measures 140 BPM — but the groove feels half as fast. Many trap and hip-hop tracks operate this way.
Double-time: A song notated at 75 BPM may feel like 150 BPM because fast subdivisions in the drumming create a perceived faster pulse. The detector measures 75 BPM — but the energy feels much faster.
This is the most common reason a BPM reading “feels wrong.” The tool is not incorrect — the song genuinely operates at two tempo levels simultaneously.
What is the difference between BPM and time signature?
BPM measures how many beats occur per minute. Time signature defines how those beats are grouped into measures. 120 BPM in 4/4 time means 120 beats per minute organised in groups of four. 120 BPM in 3/4 time means the same 120 beats per minute organised in groups of three (a waltz feel). How many taps do I need for an accurate reading?
Tap accuracy improves with the number of taps and the consistency of your tapping:

For most practical use, 8–10 steady taps is sufficient. The most important factor is consistency — tapping to the same pulse subdivision every time rather than switching between quarter notes and eighth notes mid-session.
Why does my tap tempo reading feel wrong?
The most common causes:
Half-time/double-time confusion. If you tap to a half-time feel instead of the actual beat, you will get half the correct BPM. If you tap to the eighth note pulse instead of the quarter note beat, you will get double. Try tapping to a different rhythmic subdivision and see which reading feels right.
Inconsistent tapping. Even small timing variations between taps accumulate. Focus on tapping to the most consistent, obvious pulse in the music — usually the kick drum in dance music or the downbeat in other genres.
Accidental double-tap. A single mistimed or double-tapped beat can skew the average. Most tools apply outlier filtering — but very small errors close to normal timing can still affect the result.

Why is the detected BPM incorrect for some songs?
Audio beat detection is most accurate for music with clear, consistent percussion. It can produce unreliable results for:
- Heavily swung rhythms — where beats fall off the straight grid and onset energy is unevenly distributed
- Sparse or ambient music — where few onset events exist for the algorithm to measure
- Music with tempo drift — live recordings, rubato performance, or tracks where the BPM gradually changes
- Complex polyrhythms — where multiple rhythmic layers create ambiguous onset patterns
For these cases, tap tempo typically gives more reliable results because it relies on your musical ear rather than signal analysis.
Does the audio tool detect the key as well as the BPM?
The current audio beat detection tool detects BPM only. Key detection is a separate analysis process that requires different algorithms. Key detection tools will be added to the site in future.
About the Metronome
How accurate is the online metronome?
The metronome uses the Web Audio API’s AudioContext clock for timing — the most precise timing available in a browser, with sub-millisecond accuracy. However, Bluetooth headphones and speakers introduce 100–300 ms of audio latency that will cause the perceived beat to arrive late relative to the actual click. For tempo-critical practice, use wired audio.
