If no tap is detected for more than 3 seconds, the tap sequence resets automatically so you can measure another song.

How BPM and Key Detection Works

The tool combines two different analysis methods.

Tempo Detection

Tempo is calculated using the standard formula:

BPM = 60,000 ÷ Average Millisecond Interval Between Taps

Instead of relying on a single tap interval, the calculator averages multiple consecutive taps to produce a smoother and more stable BPM estimate.

Musical Key Estimation

When microphone detection is enabled, the browser analyzes incoming audio frequencies using the Web Audio API. Dominant frequencies are converted into musical notes and then mapped to the most likely musical key together with its corresponding Camelot Wheel code.

The displayed BPM is rounded to one decimal place, while key estimates update dynamically as new audio is analyzed.
